Ramsey County invites residents to a virtual meeting on Thursday, April 8, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. to learn about the mapping of racial covenants. The meeting will be conducted through the Zoom webinar platform.
Racial covenants are clauses that were embedded into property deeds to bar people who were not white from buying or occupying the parcels of land to which they were attached.
Although racial covenants were made illegal by the 1968 Fair Housing Act, their legacy continues today in the Twin Cities. Residents are invited to learn how structural racism blocked African Americans from critical avenues for housing stability and wealth accumulation and shaped the urban landscape.
