Don’t let mosquitoes stop your summer fun. You can help reduce the number of mosquitos by removing mosquito breeding grounds. They can lay more than 200 eggs at a time, and eggs can survive for up to five years.
Mosquitoes need just a few teaspoons of water to complete their life cycle. Fill in or remove any water-holding containers from your property. Empty rainspouts and keep gutters clear of debris. Change the water in your birdfeeder at least once a week so mosquito eggs can’t mature.
You can also add a natural soil bacterium “Bti” to your ornamental ponds or fountains. This will naturally prevent mosquito larvae from developing into adults. Bti is available at most home and garden centers.
Old tires collect rainwater and can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Metropolitan Mosquito Control will take old tires that are off the rim from private residences. Call 651-645-9149 for this free service.
