[ARCHIVED] Yard Work and Emerald Ash Borer

eab tree

Be a part of the solution. Help slow the spread of Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). The City of Roseville is asking residents to take extra precautions when treating or removing an ash tree.

EAB larvae are worm-like grubs that kill ash trees by tunneling under the tree's bark. EAB larvae can hide beneath ash tree bark and then escape as adult beetles after being transported miles away.

Ash trees can be treated with insecticides but there is no guarantee that it will save the tree.  Insecticides work best on trees with at least 70% of the crown intact and trunk-injected treatments applied every two years. Treatment may not be recommended for trees with less than 70% crown cover and signs of EAB infestation.

We encourage property owners to talk with an arborist to identify whether their tree is infested, and what can be done to prevent an infestation. TREE-age or emamectin benzoate is an insecticide that is commonly injected and is not a neonicotinoid.  Other common insecticides are in the neonicotinoid group and have been linked to harming pollinators.  Residents should be aware of products and potential side effects.

It is best to remove ash trees between September and April because the adult EAB are no longer emerging. However, the logs, limbs, branches and brush from an ash tree must be disposed of properly. Ramsey County is under an EAB quarantine so the wood cannot be taken out of the county. To remain in compliance with the quarantine, some trash haulers no longer collect tree waste as part of their service to residents. Residents can hire a commercial tree or yard cleanup service to collect tree waste or take tree waste to a Ramsey County yard waste site.

The following Ramsey County brush sites accept ash tree debris. Only Ramsey County residents may use these drop off sites. Be prepared to show identification. Log on to RamseyRecycles.com or call 651-633-EASY (3279), which is answered 24/7, for hours, directions and other information.
