[ARCHIVED] Keep Fire Hydrants Clear

Roseville has more than 1,700 fire hydrants. Keeping hydrants accessible year-round is challenging. That is why the City of Roseville is asking for your help.

When the snow stops falling and it is time to clear your driveways and walks, please take a few minutes and check on the nearby fire hydrants. Dig out a three foot area around the hydrant. Ask a neighbor to help or have several neighbors take turns keeping the hydrants clear of snow. This act of kindness could benefit the entire neighborhood.

A fire engine carries enough water for about three and a half minutes of firefighting. If a hydrant is buried by snow, it is difficult to find and valuable time must be spent digging it out. When it comes to fighting fires, every second counts. In the time it takes firefighters to dig out a hydrant, a fire could double in size several times.

Roseville has an informal “Adopt a Hydrant” program. We encourage residents, businesses, scout troops, church and youth groups and individuals to adopt a hydrant in your neighborhood. By helping, you agree to keep it free from snow in the winter and overgrowth during the warmer months. It is not necessary to let the City know which hydrants you will be adopting.

Thank you for keeping Roseville’s fire hydrants clear of snow and for keeping our community safe!
