President Biden recently signed the historic Inflation Reduction Act, which puts $370 billion towards climate and clean energy programs, which is projected to reduce emissions by 1 billion metric tons by 2030. What can individuals expect from this law? - Clean energy tax credits—The tax credit for installing solar, wind, or geothermal is now 30% through 2032 and includes solar placed in service any time after January 1, 2022.
- Clean vehicle credit—The $7,500 tax credit on new Electric Vehicles will now be available at the time of purchase and is extended through 2032. Used EVs (<$25,000) also qualify for up to $4,000 or 30% of the vehicle sales price. Some limits apply - see more information here.
- High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebate—Homeowners at or below 150% of area median income can receive an upfront rebate of up to $8,000 to install heat pumps and up to $1,750 for heat pump water heaters, as well as up to $4,000 for electrical panel upgrades needed to support electrification. $1,600 is available for insulation and sealing. Homeowners can collect up to $14,000 in rebates.
- Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit—Starting in 2023, the tax credit for home improvements will be 30% with a maximum credit of $1,200. Homeowners can earn over 150% of local AMI and earn an additional $2,000 for the cost and installation of heat pumps and heat pump water heaters.
