[ARCHIVED] Roseville Hosts Karen Community Gathering

Chief Mathwig 2.jpg

Roseville Police and Fire are welcoming members of the Karen community to Roseville. On December 18, they are hosting a community gathering to share information and to get to know each other.

Members of the Karen community are refugees from the country of Burma (Myanmar). They are fleeing ethnic persecution and most have lived in refugee camps for many years.

In the past few years, the St. Paul area has seen an increase in the number of Karen moving to the area. Many are settling in Roseville and attending the Roseville Area Schools. Many of the newcomers have limited English skills and are unfamiliar with American customs and culture.

The gathering is designed to open a dialogue between Roseville Police and Fire and the Karen community. Staff will talk about health and safety issues for housing, tenants' rights, when to call 9-1-1, traffic stops, safe driving tips, fire safety, importance of smoke detectors and other topics. Members of the Karen community will offer insight to their customs. The International Institute of Minnesota and the Roseville Human Rights Commission will also attend.

The community gathering is on Thursday, December 18 at 6:00 p.m. at Roseville Lutheran Church, 1215 Roselawn Ave. Please call 651-792-7209 if you have questions.
