[ARCHIVED] Winter Travel Tips

Plan carefully before heading home for the holidays. Roseville Police offer some safe travel advice.

Check the forecast before traveling. If possible, reschedule your trip if unsafe weather conditions are predicted. If you must drive, drive slowly - allow extra time for braking and accelerating and allow plenty of distance between vehicles on the road. It’s better to leave early or arrive late.

Wear your seat belt and require passengers to wear their seat belts too. Secure small children in a car seat.

When driving, keep your car lights on so you are more visible to other drivers and pedestrians. Give your car a tune up before heading out. Make sure windshield wipers work properly and have plenty of washer fluid. Keep your gas tank full.

Stock your car with extra blankets, hats, mittens and boots. Keep a couple of long burning candles and matches in a can. Include some high-energy snacks. Carry a flashlight, flares, jumper cables and a brush and ice scraper. If stranded stay with the vehicle. Your car heater may be your only heat source.
