The Roseville City Council unanimously approved an ordinance raising the legal age to purchase tobacco and tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, in Roseville from 18 to 21 years of age at its June 18 meeting.
The City Council set an administrative fine for businesses that violate the ordinance. The ordinance will go into effect July 18.
A goal of the ordinance is to limit the availability of tobacco products and to help reduce the number of youth who begin using tobacco.
The City Council first discussed the limitations to tobacco at its March 26 Council meeting, asking staff to bring back an ordinance raising the minimum age to purchase tobacco. Staff worked with Association of Non-Smokers-Minnesota (ANSM) to draft language for the proposed ordinance. The city held a meeting for the 28 tobacco sellers in Roseville on May 24, to explain the proposed ordinance change and to listen to their concerns.
