As you get ready to start spring yard work, please do your part to protect the city’s groundwater. The chemicals you apply to the lawn can seep into groundwater and run off into the storm sewer system.
That run-off typically winds up in the community's lakes and ponds. So, as you get ready for spring planting remember:
- Do not apply fertilizers within 50 feet of a wetland, lake or pond.
- Do not apply fertilizers or herbicides to hard surfaces, such as a driveway or sidewalk.
- Do not apply fertilizers between November 15 and April 15 or when the ground is frozen.
- Ideal conditions to fertilize include a cool day with rainfall or watering immediately following application.
- Phosphorous fertilizers are prohibited in Minnesota unless a homeowner can prove the soil lacks phosphorus. Order a soil test kit at www.extension.umn.edu.
- Commercial fertilizer companies or individuals must be licensed and follow city and state laws that govern when and what types of fertilizers can be used.
- Use the minimum amount of fertilizer based on the manufacturer’s recommended rates.
Outdated or unwanted lawn chemicals can be taken to a free Household Hazardous Waste site. Visit RamseyRecycles.com or call 651-633-EASY (3279) answered 24/7 for information.
