Every Second Counts: Plan Two Ways Out. In a fire, seconds can make all the difference. The Roseville Fire Department encourages residents to take steps to help reduce the chance of death or injury in a fire.
- Have smoke detectors in every bedroom and on every level of the home. The risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms.
- Check smoke detectors monthly. Change batteries once a year and replace the detector every 10 years.
- Identify two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit.
- Make sure all windows and doors open easily. Teach your children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them.
- If a person has special needs, keep wheelchair, cane, glasses, hearing aids, or other equipment within easy reach in case of a fire.
- Practice a home fire drill - once at night and once during the day with everyone in your home, and practice using different ways out.
- Close doors as you leave – this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire.
- Make sure your house number is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find.
