The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Pipeline Safety urges residents to make sure gas meters are clear of ice and snow accumulation that can block the regulator vent.
If you heat your home or operate appliances with natural gas, you likely have a gas meter on the outside of your building. The gas meter has a pressure regulator vent that must be unobstructed to work properly. If the vent is covered with snow or ice, the gas regulator won’t work correctly. Gas could continue to flow, resulting in too much pressure and possible gas leaks inside your home or business or the gas flow could stop and no heat could get in, causing frozen pipes and other problems.
