Some reactions are normal and expected after emergency events. Some common experiences include:

  • Physical Signs-

Emotional Signs
  • Denial, avoiding discussions of the events
  • Feelings of helplessness
  • Grief
  • Irritability
  • Memories of prior events
  • Outrage
  • Sadness, anger, fear or anxiety
  • Shock, disbelief, feeling of numbness
  • Becoming overly protective
  • Change in spiritual/worship habits
  • Changes in social activities
  • Difficulty with sexual relationships
  • Easily startled
  • Greater dependence on others
  • Increased conflicts at home and work
  • Isolation
Extreme Symptoms
Other reactions are considered extreme, and should cause you to seek professional help. Be alert if you or someone you know experiences these symptoms:
  • Constant, increased conflicts with loved ones
  • Excessive use of drugs or drinking to escape feelings
  • Extreme cases of normal symptoms, i.e. staying in bed for days or even weeks
  • Feelings of depression or anxiety that interfere with daily activities
