Fire Department Updates

Chief Brosnahan

Chief’s Message

Thank you for your support and for subscribing to the Roseville Fire Department’s quarterly report. The past several months has been extremely busy with a lot of unique calls for service, our brand-new electric fire engine arriving, exceptional training, and a big staffing and grant announcement. Our on-duty firefighters continue to be extremely busy with our call volume demand. Roseville firefighters remain committed to serving our community through our response, training, and community outreach. And will continue to do so.

First things first for this quarterly update, in late September the Roseville Fire Department was notified that we were awarded a $3.9 million staffing grant through the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA); this grant is called a SAFER grant (Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response). This grant has been formally accepted by the City of Roseville and will be a huge asset in the hiring of 15 additional firefighters. As has been the case for several years, our department’s call volume continues to tick up at unprecedented levels. Our staffing and response model is falling well behind the demand placed on it. But this grant, once operational, is a monumental game changer for our level of service and daily staffing.

There is still a lot to do regarding the acceptance of the grant, as well as how and when we operationalize and implement the grant. But it is evident that a significant staffing enhancement is needed in our near future to better aid the department’s ability to respond and support the safety of our community. The grant pays the majority of the costs for 15 new full-time firefighters for three years, allowing the City to have some financial savings for the three years of the grant while also allowing the City to build in some strategic financial planning for when the positions are no longer covered under the grant in 2029 and beyond.

SAFER

In early October the department took official delivery of our electric fire engine. This vehicle will provide the organization with a consistent response vehicle, long-term sustainability, and is hoped to improve firefighter wellness and safety with the many different ergonomic considerations and reduced cab noise to name just a couple. Firefighters will be training on this piece of apparatus for quite a few weeks before we are fully ready to put it into service. So, keep an eye out in the community for our firefighters training; we will notify the community once the new engine is officially in service and part of the daily response plan.

While we have just passed National Fire Prevention Week (October 5-October 11), it is important to remind the community about the use of Lithium-Ion batteries. This year’s campaign focuses on the importance of safely buying, charging, and recycling lithium-ion batteries to prevent fires. This includes purchasing only certified products, using the correct charger on a hard, flat surface, and never disposing of batteries in regular trash or recycling bins. More information on fire safety around lithium ion-batteries can be found here: https://www.nfpa.org/events/fire-prevention-week

Community Outreach

Fridays with Firefighters

Summer 2025 was a great one, yet again! We are so proud to continue hosting these community events. Fridays with Firefighters brought over 600 folks through the fire station this summer, offering truck tours, hose spraying, and a lot of other fun things to do! We were so grateful for all of our other visitors, like Lindstrom Restoration, who showed the importance of "close before you doze", Regions Hospital with their car seat information, and the State Fire Marshal's office with important fire safety. We hope to see everyone again next year!

Kids are able to spray a real firehose at our new fire props! Firefighter Brian Porter and Fire Cadet Dani Reali put together the props for the department this year, and they've already got plenty of use!

Thanks to our partners in public safety, Roseville Police, Allina, and Ramsey County Emergency Management for coming and teaching about what they do to keep us safe.

Fire Explorer State Fair Competition

Our fire explorers went back to the State Fair for the first time in over 10 years to compete in the Governor's Day fire safety competition. The group did great and learn a lot! We'll definitely be back again next year!

Senior Resource Fair

This year we brought back an event we hadn't done in over 5 years. We worked with vendors from around the area to come together in one place to offer resources to seniors. These included transportation information, physical therapy, Medicare consultation, fraud awareness, vaccinations, and many more. We hope to continue this event in the future!
