Fire Department Updates

School visit
Chief

Chief’s Message

With school returning in September the Fire Department started our own return to the classroom.  The Fire Department made multiple school and daycare visits in the month of September with many more to come in October and beyond.  These outreach opportunities are so key to promoting safety and service connectivity between students and the Fire Department.  We look forward to the numerous visits we have scheduled in October.  In addition, several firefighters have enrolled in different educational programs to enhance their personal and professional capacity.  Our Fire Cadet and two firefighter/EMTs have started paramedic and firefighting classes this fall in an effort to improve their skills and abilities.

Looking ahead, the Fire Department has a few activities I wanted to make you aware of.  The first is our annual Open House, scheduled for Saturday, October 8th from 10AM-Noon.  We will have live demonstrations, truck tours, a tour of the fire station, and other safety activities.  On Monday, October 10th we will be hosting a Senior Health Fair at the Fire Station from 10AM-Noon.  We are partnering with multiple service and outreach agencies to provide realistic and necessary resources and outreach opportunities for seniors in our community.  Flyers and information for both of these events are in this newsletter.

We are just over a month into our Advanced Life Support first response program.  The ability to provide a higher and enhanced level of emergency medical care to our residents and guests is a great opportunity for the Fire Department to take on.  And we can see in the first handful of weeks the need is there.  We have provided multiple medications and enhanced procedures that have made a marked difference on the patients we have encountered.

September Community Outreach

Fill the Boot

IAFF Local 5051 and Roseville Fire recently held a two-day Fill-The-Boot event at Lunds & Byerly's in Roseville with proceeds benefiting the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) whom the IAFF has had a partnership with for the last 68 years. This year we were able to raise nearly $8,000. Thanks to everyone that donated this year!

911

9/11

The month of September is a challenging month for our nation as we remember the attacks from 9/11 and the loss that so many suffered from those events. As we do each year, we raised the American Flag on our ladder truck in the morning hours of 9/11 to pay tribute to all those who lost loved ones on 9/11/01. We will always remember the sacrifice of the 343 firefighters who lost their lives that morning in an attempt to save countless others.

Becker Finn

Awards

State Representative Jamie Becker-Finn was awarded a fire service axe from the Minnesota State Fire Chief's Association Legislative Committee at our Fire Station in September. This axe was a symbol of appreciation for Representative Becker-Finn’s dedication and support of the Minnesota Fire Service. Representative Becker-Finn has continued to champion legislation supporting the fire service and has been a local advocate for our firefighters over the years. We are grateful for her continued support!

September Notable Events

parking fire

Parking Ramp Fire

Crews responded to report of a fire at the Metro Transit Parking Ramp in September. Upon arrival firefighters found active fire in a space just above the entrance overhang roof and the side of the building. Accessing the area where the fire was located proved to be quite challenging and required several different methods to remove the building materials. (Pictures Included)

Arden Hills Commercial Fire

Roseville firefighters assisted the Lake Johanna Fire Department (LJFD) with a commercial building fire in September. The fire was located inside of a large printing machine and was quickly extinguished.

Shoreview House Fire

Roseville firefighters assisted LJFD on a residential home fire in September as well. While enroute crews could see a large volume of fire from a significant distance (pictures attached to this e-mail.) It was discovered the house was under complete renovation at the time the fire started which allowed the fire to spread rapidly throughout the home. Firefighters conducted a defensive fire attack preventing the fire from spreading to the garage area of the home.

September Training Events

ALS First Response

September was a busy month for our training division. While we started our ALS First Response program in August, September was spent focusing in reinforcing the use of these new skills and helping to assure that each firefighter is confident in these new skills for use in the field. Additional training included our new cardiac monitors, new methods of administering epinephrine for allergic reactions, and our new video laryngoscope device (used to see down a patients throat during a choking emergency.)

Ladder

Ladder Truck Operations

In addition to all of our medical training activities in September our crews spent time training on our ladder truck operations. These specialized apparatus require a significant amount of training to remain proficient in their use, during a building fire, seconds count and making sure we can quickly and efficiently deploy our ladder trucks is a critical task on the fire ground.

car fire training

Car Fire Training

In the early morning hours of September 15th crews were able to conduct some live fire training with a vehicle that had been used by the Fire Explorers for extrication training. This training provides firefighters with real life experience that helps better develop the fine motor skills needed to operate quickly and efficiently on all fire grounds.
