Chief’s Message

March has been an exciting month as we begin to ramp up an exciting new program, Advanced Life Support (ALS) First Response.
On February 28th we went to our City Council to request the ability to enhance our medical first response capabilities and capacity from a Basic Life Support (EMT) level to an Advanced Life Support (Paramedic) level.  Our City Council was very supportive of this initiative and allowed the fire department to begin the implementation process for this initiative.  The enhanced medical care will have an impact on all in the City.  It allows the fire department to provide an advanced level of care in a matter of minutes, better mitigating life-saving incidents and improving hospital outcomes.  It is yet another significant tool in our toolbox to better serve our community.
Over the next several months we will be purchasing appropriate equipment, like 12-lead ECG monitors, and other pertinent medications and interventions to begin providing this service.  It is our goal to procure and train on the equipment over the next several months with an anticipated start to the ALS First Response program late summer, early fall!
As we transition into spring and warmer weather I wanted to remind everyone of the importance of safe outdoor cooking and grilling.  Please make sure to keep your grill clean, at least 10 feet away from your home, away from deck railings and out from under eaves.  Most home fires involving grills are caused by gas grills, check gas tank hose and tubing and ensure it is in proper order before using.

Explorer Program

The Roseville Fire Explorer program will be back up and running this spring!  Explorers will get some hands on training as well as plenty of community volunteer opportunities and make lifelong memories! Contact Emily at 651-792-7309.

girl scouts

Thank you, Girl Scouts!

While March was no doubt a busy month for the Girl Scouts selling their famous cookies, we were fortunate enough to have one young girl scout stop by the Fire Station and donate cookies to our firefighters working that day. We are so incredibly grateful for this and the numerous kind gestures all of those in our community extend to use each day – thank you for allowing us the opportunity to serve you!

March Notable Events

shoreview house fire

Shoreview House Fire

Firefighters responded to assist the Lake Johanna Fire Department in the early morning hours of March 21st in Shoreview. We have an automatic aid agreement with the Lake Johanna Fire Department that provides assistance for structure fires in all of our communities between both departments.

Roseville Commercial Fire

Roseville Firefighters made a quick stop of a fire in the Massage Xcape in Roseville in late March. A worker arriving for the day and opened the door of the business to find heavy smoke coming out of the door, 911 was notified and firefighters responded immediately making quick entry into the business and extinguishing a fire that was in a clothes dryer. Crews remained on scene for less than 30 minutes.

Vehicle Entrapment

Vehicle Entrapment

Firefighters responded to a report of a male trapped under his vehicle. Upon arrival firefighters found a male in the parking lot of Auto Zone who had become trapped while working under his vehicle. Firefighters utilized our pneumatic air bag system (think large inflatable balloon) to raise the vehicle up into the air and quickly remove the male from under his vehicle. The male was transported to Regions Hospital with a firefighter riding along for patient care while enroute.

extrication

Extrication

Firefighters responded to an automobile accident at County Road B and Cleveland Ave in March, upon arrival crews discovered that the driver of the vehicle was trapped and extrication would be needed. Using our hydraulic and battery operated extrication tools (jaws of life) we were able to quickly and safely remove the victim so they could be transported to the hospital for additional care.

dumpster fire

Dumpster Fire

On March 21st firefighters responded to a dumpster fire behind Bed Bath and Beyond.  The burning dumpster spread to an enclosed cardboard recycling dumpster.  The dumpster was very full and the crew worked for 2 and a half hours to extinguish the smoldering fire inside.

March Training Events

ice

Ice Rescue Training

March was spent conducting Ice Rescue training with our firefighters. Timing this training each year is always tricky as we try to find the moment when the ice is truly “thin” and can give us the best experience of what it feels like to truly fall through and get out of thin ice. Given our weird spring weather you will likely see firefighters on the lakes during the month of April as well!

IV Training

Firefighter Jeremy Schmitz (seen leaning over a table) is practicing obtaining IV access on his Battalion Chief Ted Larson. While practicing this skill is routine for our firefighters, the training FF Schmitz was conducting had him laying over the top of a table trying to gain access for the IV on the floor. Practicing for these “non-traditional” scenarios helps firefighters be better prepared to respond to unique situations that happen during 911 emergency response..
