Chief’s Message

2022 is off to a busy start for Roseville Fire.  In January we responded to multiple fires both in the City and supporting our neighboring jurisdictions through our automatic-aid and closest unit agreements.  In addition, we had a serious bus accident in which we assisted with extrication and treatment of injuries; thankfully most injuries were non-serious.  Our call volume pace of 2021 has continued into 2022 and we are up for the task as we progress through the year.

This winter is bringing some serious stretches of cold weather.  Please be mindful of using a space heater or other devices to create more warmth in your home.  Do not leave an operational space heater unattended, do not warm clothes or have anything within at least three feet of the device, and do not sleep with the space heater on; turn it on prior to going to sleep to warm up the area, then shut it down before going to sleep.  And it is best to plug it straight into an outlet, not a power strip.  Stay safe this winter!

Recent Retirements

The Fire Department recognized three firefighters who retired recently or in the month of January.  The first is Matt Beauchane.  Matt served for just over 20 years with Roseville Fire.  Matt served in different leadership capacities as a Lieutenant and Captain, and was a SWAT-Medic.  Andy Chandler was a 20 year member of the department and even started out as a Fire Explorer.  Andy was active in training at the department, both in participating and leading training.  Erik Dickson was also a 20-year member that retired in January.  Erik was active with our technical rescue team and was one of our most active call-back responders.  Congratulations to all three of these firefighters on reaching 20 years and thank you for your service to the department and the community!

January Notable Events

Dwelling Fires

January was an extremely busy month for 911 emergency calls, we responded to assist our partners at Lake Johanna Fire with two dwelling fires in January, one coming during the overnight cold hours on January 1st, firefighters faced below zero temperatures and a very difficult to extinguish fire in the attic space of the home. Later that week crews responded again with Lake Johanna to assist with a fire that had started in the garage attic space, both fires required significant resources to complete, thanks to the efforts of the fire departments in Ramsey County to train together these incidents resulted in a decrease in property loss and no injuries to firefighters or civilians.

Harmar Incident

A rather strange incident occurred at the HarMar mall in January with a vehicle hitting a decretive  pillar outside Michaels. Thankfully there were no injuries and while the building sustained damage it was not structural in nature.

January Training Events

Search and Rescue

This critically important skill is trained on frequently and is the core of our ability to find those who may be trapped within a building fire. The increase in our on-duty firefighters as a result of our SAFER grant award has provided the additional staffing needed to allow the fire department to conduct searches and put out a fire at the same time. This change allows us to complete our searches quicker and find victims faster increasing the likelihood of a positive outcome.

Firefighter I and II Trainings

Multiple cities across Ramsey County assist in doing their part in helping teach some new recruits from throughout the County the basics related to Firefighter 1 and Firefighter 2. In January Roseville had the opportunity to spend the evening teaching these rookies the basics related to ropes and knots. Battalion Chief Larson, Lieutenant Thornberg, Lieutenant Priester, and Fire Inspector DuBay all partook in the activities and the firefighters all seemed to learn a great deal.
