Chief’s Corner

As summer is winding down, the Fire Department remains incredibly busy serving the community. We are currently on pace for a record call volume year.

As we progress into the fall and winter months it is one of our goals to better assess the fire and EMS preventative needs of our community. Our Fire Department seeks to not only be reactionary and responsive with the emergent needs of our community, but to be better at preventative and outreach programs to alleviate or reduce the responsive need. In the coming months we will continue to develop plans and programs that help us reach Community Risk Reduction (CRR) initiatives to assure safe and equitable outreach and services from your Fire Department.

Have a safe and memorable Labor Day Weekend!

August Community Events

Fridays with Firefighters

The Fire Department was invigorated to have such a great outpouring of support and fun at our August Friday’s with Firefighters event; thank you for being a part of it. And thank you to all of our special guests! Everyone enjoyed some Dunkin Donuts, learned a lot about water safety with Regions Hospital, and opened library cards with Ramsey County Pop Up Library. The involvement from the community showed us that this is an important program to continue long into our future. I look forward to being able to host more in Summer 2022!

Night to Unite

The Fire Department participated in nearly 80 block parties this year on Night to Unite. It was great to be back out in the community meeting with families and showing off our trucks, thank you for the wonderful hospitality!!

Officer Howard Johnson Memorial Workout

August 16 was the 49th line of duty death anniversary of Roseville Police Officer Howard Johnson #143. The Roseville Police Department planned a small event and a workout to honor Howie and remember his service and sacrifice. Firefighters joined in on the workout

Squirrel Rescue

If you follow us on social media (and if you don’t, you should!) you saw earlier in the month we completed a first of its kind animal rescue for us. A concerned community member called the fire department to report a squirrel had gotten its head trapped in the hole of a commercial dumpster. Firefighters were able to conduct a highly technical rescue of the squirrel by cutting the metal around the small animal away so we could remove the squirrel. The squirrel was transferred to the wildlife rehab center for evaluation.

Vehicle Extrication

Friday August 20th, C Shift responded to a report of a rollover. On arrival, one occupant was found stuck in her vehicle with minor injuries. Struts were used to stabilize the vehicle and the patient was removed through the windshield without incident.

August Training Highlights

NuStar Annual Testing

Firefighters participated in the annual fire suppression system testing at NuStar Terminal. This testing is completed annually to assure that the fuel tanker sprinkler systems are operating properly. While this serves as an annual testing requirement for NuStar it is also a great opportunity for our firefighter’s to see how the systems operate to better understand what firefighters might be required to do when arriving on an emergency at this location. We are grateful for our partnership with NuStar!

Joint Trainings

Partnerships with our neighboring departments are critical to helping our Fire Department accomplish our mission. In an effort to make sure that we and our neighboring departments are as prepared as possible we began joint training initiatives in August with Maplewood, Little Canada, and Lake Johanna. We are working on apartment building operations to make us and our neighboring departments more efficient in these high occupancy buildings. Special thanks to everyone who participated as we conducted walk through planning at the Rosedale Estates apartment complex. We will soon be doing training at additional buildings!

New Ladder Training

Crews have spent time in August conducting training on our new ladder and some of Roseville’s tallest buildings. This training helps us to know the limitations of our equipment should an emergency ever occur at these locations. Thanks to the building management staff for allowing us to conduct training at their location.
