City News Update

Message to the Community From City Manager Patrick Trudgeon

On behalf of the City of Roseville, we send our deepest sympathies to the family of Daunte Wright, who at 20 years of age lost his life in a traffic stop with a Brooklyn Center police officer. We stand with Brooklyn Center and our extended community as we endure another painful interaction between law enforcement and a person of color.

We recognize the pain and trauma communities of color are continuing to endure. We recognize and validate the concerns from our entire community for law enforcement agencies to do better. We are committed and determined to see those improvements through so that our entire community truly feels safe, protected, and valued.

We know we cannot do this work alone and will continue to rely on the voices, skills, and talents of our community. In addition to this critical community support, the Roseville Police Department has committed both effort and resources to improve policing policies and tactics. The department has worked, and will continue to work, to ensure that information regarding its operations and actions are available to the community through the Transparency and Data Sharing Initiative reporting tool found here.

In 2018, the Roseville Police Department updated its use of force policies. Those policies comply with all 8 Can’t Wait recommended guidelines that were widely publicized in 2020. Roseville Police officers regularly train to these policies, including use of force, de-escalation and crisis intervention.

Additional work continues to take place throughout all our city departments, which are actively working with a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Consultant and our newly hired Equity and Inclusion Manager to improve Roseville’s responsiveness to the needs of our entire community, including those traditionally underrepresented and often unheard in city government.

We value all members of our community. With humility, forward-thinking, and leveraging the strength of Roseville’s diversity, we can meet our goal to be welcoming and inclusive of all. We encourage you to visit our website to learn what we are doing as a city. In addition, we have many ways for you to engage and have your voice heard, or offer your talents, expertise and skills. With your help, we will continue to improve.
