Zero Waste Events

Just because Roseville holds events that attract hundreds of people, doesn't mean we have to make tons of trash. Instead we make some of our activities Zero Waste events. That means we plan to reduce the waste we generate, then we work to recycle or compost as much of the waste we do have. More than 95% of waste generated gets reused, recycled or composted. Thus we take something many people think of as trash and turn it into a treasure.
In addition to traditional bottle and can recycling, the Zero Waste events collect organic material for composting. The events use special biodegradable cutlery made from cornstarch. It is collected along with paper cups, food waste, paper towels and other organic materials and taken to an industrial composting facility to biodegrade. Industrial composting facilities are able to handle many materials that can’t go in your backyard compost. The finished compost is used for landscaping, erosion control other similar projects.
One example of this is the Taste of Rosefest. The City of Roseville, Roseville Rotary, and Eureka Recycling partnered to make the event that draws thousands of people a Zero Waste Event. Eureka Recycling provided a Taste of Rosefest Zero Waste Summary that highlights the success of the partnership.
